    Kenneth Rosenfield, M.D., FACC, FSCAI
    Director

Dr. Kenneth Rosenfield is Head of the Section of Vascular Medicine and Intervention in the Division of Cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital. His research interests are focused on the development of novel, minimally invasive strategies for treatment of complex peripheral and coronary artery disease.  He has played a leading role in clinical trials investigating the utility of renal, carotid, and lower extremity revascularization, intravascular ultrasound, excimer laser angioplasty, thrombolytic therapy, and other technologies for use in cardiovascular disease.  He also worked with Dr. Jeffrey Isner to develop the concept of angiogenic therapy for critical limb ischemia.

Dr. Rosenfield has numerous scientific publications to his credit and is a frequent contributor in the form of book chapters and review articles on the subject of management of peripheral arterial disease.

As a prior chairman and longstanding member of the Peripheral Vascular Disease Committee of the American College of Cardiology, current Chair of the Diagnostic & Interventional Cardiac Catheterization Committee (DICC) of the America Heart Association, current Chair of the SCAI Ad hoc Committee on PAD, and member of the SCAI Ad hoc Carotid and Cerebrovascular Disease Committee, Dr. Rosenfield has played a leadership role in defining new modalities of treatment and expanding the role of the cardiologist and other specialties in management of patients with peripheral vascular disease.  He was on the organizing committee of the Vascular Centers Conference, where he worked to engender collaboration among specialties.  This work has been brought to the local level, where he has played an instrumental role in creating a thriving, collaborative, integrated, multidisciplinary vascular program at his home institution, Massachusetts General Hospital.

Finally, Dr. Rosenfield has played a prominent role in establishing guidelines and practice standards in treatment of peripheral carotid, renal, and coronary artery disease. He served on the writing committee for the ACC/AHA PAD Guidelines; ACC/AHA Competency Statement for treatment of PAD; the TASC II writing committee; and the multidisciplinary writing task force developing guidelines for training, competence, and credentialing for carotid intervention, which he also chaired. He regularly interfaces with the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, representing the cardiovascular community on various issues pertaining to peripheral artery disease.  He has run a fellowship in vascular medicine for 19 years, has trained numerous physicians and allied personnel in management of vascular and cardiovascular disease. He is also involved in developing novel modalities for training physicians in the future, namely the use of medical simulators and specialized training programs, such as the FAME Program, which he coordinated through ACC/SVS/SCAI.

Dr. Rosenfield received his BA from Dartmouth College, his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1982, and performed his residency training at Kaiser San Francisco.  He did his cardiology fellowship at New England Medical Center, followed by an interventional cardiology fellowship at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center of Boston.  He remained at St. Elizabeth’s for many years thereafter, working with his colleague Dr. Jeffrey Isner, to develop a unique Vascular Medicine program.  He has been in his current position at Massachusetts General Hospital since May of 2002.  He lives with his wife and three children in Newton, Massachusetts.
